Matthew Criddle - Conference Speaker   Matthew Criddle

MANAGING DIRECTOR
NATURESAVE

Matthew Criddle has been working in the insurance industry for 23 years. He set up Naturesave as the founding director in 1994.

Naturesave is an ethical insurance company, which is often the opposite to what most people believe insurance to be, both in the origins of the product offered, and in the way it is marketed.

Matthew Criddle started the company 14 years ago having completed an MBA, the dissertation for which was on the “applicability of the concept of sustainable development within the insurance industry”.

Having worked within the insurance industry, up to that point, for 10 years, primarily at Lloyd’s of London, Matthew wanted to do something for himself and in doing so, make it worthwhile – something that mattered, and that could “make a difference”. In the late ‘80s he became more aware of global-warming and climate change, and what this could mean for us all, and future generations, if we just sat back and let it happen. He strongly believed that if you want to see change, you ultimately have to get involved. It’s a bit like having a vote – you can’t sincerely criticise a government if you didn’t even vote for anyone! And whilst he recycled household waste, used energy saving methods at home, travelled by train wherever possible, he wanted to work towards getting other people, and businesses, to look at the ways in which they too could save/recycle/conserve/preserve by adopting more environmentally-aware trading practices and lifestyles.

Naturesave is additionally ethical in the sense that it offers a good service for what is a necessary part of everyday life, together with contributions to specific environmental and conservationist projects, free environmental performance reviews for SME clients and lobbying within the insurance industry. On the wider stage Naturesave is striving to change the way the insurance industry works – currently by “mopping up” the effects of accidents, some of which are undoubtedly due to human-induced climate change. Naturesave’s primary objective is to use the insurance industry as a vehicle for sustainable development.

Criddle quotes “One of the realities of my job is that insurance is to most people, a necessity of everyday life. It’s something you’ve got to have”. Naturesave recognises the choice consumers have today and that people want and deserve a pleasant human service when they ring up for a quotation. Naturesave provides a helpful and respectful approach, and an insurance policy tailored to what that individual or business actually needs. Naturesave’s view is to look at the longer term perspective, to remind ourselves that despite all the everyday hassles and drawbacks (as well as the technological advantages!), what we are all working for, in the end, is a cleaner environment.

Over the past 14 years Naturesave has funded a broad variety of projects throughout the UK from water voles & otters, to renewable energy and recycling projects. Additionally Naturesave has assisted many businesses and organisations in becoming more environmentally aware in their trading practices through its environmental performance reviews.

Naturesave enjoys connecting with like-minded individuals to change the way we work to improve our environment – many of Naturesave’s commercial clients are also “green” but increasingly it is attracting firms who have not yet had time to consider the commercial mechanics of sustainable development and represent a growing eco-curious sector of the market.

For further details on the company’s activities see www.naturesave.co.uk
